Winter Fashion

Our 2011 Winter fashion is arriving next week.  So popular was our collection of White Label Summer fashion that we decided to order selected pieces from the winter range.

We also stock a wide range of Smitten, a Tasmanian made, Tasmanian owned superfine merino wool label for men and women.  Warm in winter and cool in summer the Smitten range includes great basic pieces that we all need in our winter wardrobe.

Autumn is Here

A little chilly here today, a reminder of what we are to expect for the next few months.   Easter is a great time to cosy your space with cushions, rugs and soft lighting.   In my few and far between spare moments I have been perusing the murobond colour board for our winter palette.  Expect some ebony and ivory with a splash of something warm!!!
The striking little pebble table lamps arrived today for those who have been waiting....
and we now have wonki ware bowls in a larger size, the pasta bowl.
The perfect size for a bowl of hot winter soup or pasta.
I have a lovely next door neighbour who drops by every day with fresh produce from his farm, on the banks of the Tamar River.  Today it was eggplant and red peppers.   We are so fortunate to have such beautiful produce grown or raised on the outskirts of our city and for us, delivered to our door or sold next door!  Landfall Farm Fresh at 49 Balfour Street provides consumers with locally grown product direct from their farm to our homes.  Best quality meat free of all nasty contaminates and hormones.

Back to design and cosying your space.......
A sneak peek at some of the "warm".... arriving earlier in the week, these cushions have been very popular,  proving that we are starting to cosy our nests for the months to come!

Renovation Update

Yesterday I cleaned the floors and tiles in the apartment above the shop, which is almost complete and ready for finishing touches such as mirrors, blinds and furniture.....

my mother was clearly amused by the bath in front of the window....but for me, what could be better than soaking in a bath with a view at the end of a busy day?  Hope the tenants agree!

Today the carpet was laid in the bedrooms...
not usually a fan of carpet, but it has made a huge difference to the bedrooms and will be cosy in winter.
Anyone know how to clean grout off tiles?  Please let me know.

A before photo.  Sometimes we have to look back to see how far we have come!
Today

Before....
removing the layers revealed a more appealing fireplace... and gone is the green laminex and vinyl flooring...
love the new concrete benchtops...

and my personal assistant gives her stamp of approval from the comfort of her Balfour Street bed!  She has been busy with the very important task of ensuring that none of the neighbouring cats poke their noses over the fence, and that as you can see is clearly exhausting!!!

Tactile Texture

Texture, one of the more subtle of design elements is the star in our new window display. Texture adds interest and variety to monochromatic or neutral colour schemes.   Above, contrasting  textures such as the smooth glass against the heavily textured weave of the ottoman adds variety and interest as does the fur cushion on the linen chair.   A favourite design element of mine, especially in winter when the thought of an oversized soft chair and chuncky knit woollen throw rug in a sunny corner of the house is very appealing.

Moody

No not me.......the walls!!!    Are you ready for some dark moody colours on your walls???  Love these photos of other people's rooms but not brave enough to stray from beige or off white?  I too, am still living within the safe confines of beige and whites with a bit of tint.  Why is it that when we are younger we love colour in full saturation..... the brighter the better?   As a child whenever we moved, which we did often, we were allowed to decorate our bedrooms.   I once went through a navy blue and green phase and chose a very vibrant green for the walls (which was soon repainted a slightly more muted shade of green at my parents suggestion)  I still love that green but now enjoy it in foliage in a vase or in the garden!

To a certain extent when choosing colours we are dictated to by factors such as natural light, space and the orientation and era of our homes.    I love the colours on these walls, but note, both rooms have huge expanses of glass letting in plenty of natural light....something to consider when building or renovating.

For the moment I will get my fix of dark walls at ecoco.....watch that space!  I'm in the mood for painting and I have a tinting machine full of tints!!!

Perfectly Kept House!

home

Today we received some gorgeous new books.  One I have been waiting for for ages, "A Perfectly Kept House Is The Sign Of A Misspent Life" - love it.   I think it could become my new motto!  It's full of photos of "lived in" homes, which I personally find much more interesting than boring bland perfect spaces.  The homes are filled with collections, memories, children, pets, clutter, work, and lots of creativity.
Which brings me to this photo of home, living with four males has its challenges, I gave up trying to have a perfectly kept home years ago, can't even photograph my own home without capturing a collection of ties and clothes hanging off the dining room chairs!   Then when I looked closer at the photo (which was taken about 4 years ago) on the blackboard is the "Tidy Bedroom Competition" one of my many strategies for trying to encourage the boys to keep their rooms tidy.  I don't think anyone has any points!!!
